We are absolutely thrilled to feature Melissa Alam. The Philadelphia-based ladypreneur is Editor-in-Chief at one of our favorite online communities, Femme and Fortune, a Strategic Brand Developer and has quite a bit more “magnificent” up her sleeve. Go on now. Scroll down and get that inspiration!
Current location: Philadelphia, PA
Where are you from? I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, went to boarding school in the hills of Connecticut, and then landed in the heart of Philly for college and have stayed since!
Education: Went to Temple University for Marketing and International Business. Minored in being a social butterfly.
Formal Title: Strategic Brand Developer & Editor-In-Chief
What is Femme & Fortune? Femme & Fortune is a community for the modern women co-founded by myself and my friend and fellow blogger, Celestine. We hope to empower, educate, and unite women of all backgrounds through our content and voice. We’re also co-hosting an upcoming empowerment conference this summer!
What did you do before? After college, I worked at a few ad agencies in digital marketing (media buying, SEO, and social media). Realizing that I work best as my own boss, I gave my two weeks in and dove into the crazy world of freelancing!
What did you think you’d be doing now when you were 10? Hhhmm, probably be a teacher of some sorts. Or traveling the world. Or being some sort of comic book hero (let’s just say I was a huge Buffy fan haha).
Is Femme & Fortune your dream job? If not, what else is in the works? Yes! I’ve always wanted to work for a magazine and work in the digital marketing field. Femme & Fortune has allowed me to have the title of Editor-In-Chief and really learn about managing a team of writers, pitching to businesses, and interviewing men and women for our features.
Are you involved in any side hustles, ladypreneur collabs or baby projects? Tell us about them. Day in, day out I work with multiple clients as a strategic brand developer under my own name. It’s a title I gave myself, but I typically offer website creation, graphic design, photography, social media strategy, and more for different small businesses and creative entrepreneurs near and far from me. I also love teaching bloggers about (you guessed it!) blogging through another business called Blog Bloom. The next project I have in the works is a network for freelancers I’m creating with my boyfriend!
What does your daily routine consist of? I’m not really a morning person, so I usually start my day around 10 or 11am (I know, I need to wake up earlier!). From there, most days feel like I’m a bat out of hell. I guess it’s the plight of being an entrepreneur or self-proclaimed “ideaholic.” I work on client deliverables throughout the day, post and pitch articles for Femme & Fortune, conduct meetings with new clients, network with local businesses and people, blog or guest post for different sites, tweet my heart out, and check emails non-stop. Does Amazon sell more time in the day yet?
How do you balance work and life and is that actually even possible? To be honest, I’m not the best at this “balance” you speak of! I’m learning how to delegate tasks to my co-partner and assistant, but there’s still a high volume of work that always needs to be done. I’ve become quite the hermit this past year because of my workaholic tendencies, and I hope to change that for 2014. My other goal is to be able to turn off my laptop by 9pm each day (still late, but I’m taking baby steps!) and spend more time with my boyfriend, friends and family.
You have to do it and you hate it – what is your least favorite task to do at FF? Taxes. Ugh.
What are your favorite business lady apps? Boomerang for Gmail (allows you to send emails later, perfect for late night Gmailers like moi), GroupMe (to text a group of people), Afterlight (love this for editing my photos for Instagram), Pinterest (for inspiration and traffic), Hiveage (currently using this for my invoices), and Spotify (to keep my mind sane with music).
Top 5 favorite cities? I want to travel more so my next destinations to visit are New Orleans, Atlanta, San Francisco, LA, and Austin. Current favorites are DC, NYC, and Chicago!
Red, White or Sparkling? Red, always. Here’s a secret – I almost always choose a wine according to the bottle’s branding.
Tell us the best place to eat in your city. Circles Thai in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philly. It’s hands down the best Thai food I’ve ever had and I never get tired of their crab rangoons or pad thai!
Words to live by… “Impossible is just a word” and most recently, “You have as many hours in a day as Beyonce.”
In 5 years you’ll be… Melissa Alam – nationally acclaimed entrepreneur and role model for the masses. Well, something along those lines!
On being a woman entrepreneur… Use your brains, be confident, and own it. We’re stronger in numbers, so don’t forget to collaborate with other like-minded women. Basically, just kick ass and prove the world that you are amazing.
